The article deals with the historical route Arkhangelsk – Mezen and the role of Alexander Shrenk, the Russian scientist, who gave a detailed description of this territory, covering a wide variety of scientific disciplines: geography, geology, hydrology, biology, economics, ethnography, linguistics, etc. Updating this historical route, identifying its various paths, land routes and winter roads, rivers and channels will create good opportunities for the development of tourism and the inclusion of this region of the Russian North into intensive social and economic activities.
