This article explores the beginnings of the travel journal, focusing on the travel manuscripts of François de Pavie and Lambert Darmont, travellers in the Middle East in the 16th century. As a form which favours multiple and disjointed expression, the travel journal welcomes the richness of the world in a subjective and immediate way. It does not follow a narrative structure and can also - and the Pavia journal is an example of this - make use of previously published images or, as with Darmont’s text, can do the opposite and take over another's text, adding one’s own illustrations.
