Through iconography, this article analyses the perception of the Alpine landscape in the Romantic period. By highlighting a co-presence of European elites and "little people" in these images, the travel representations bear witness to a situation in which both resident and newcomer communicate and exchange. Through an anthropological approach that tempers constructivist notions, the author shows that these images are significant from geographical, aesthetic, sociological and historical perspectives.
