The research on walnut crops carried out at the Botanical Garden aimed at conserving genetic resources, analyzing the segregation of morpho-anatomical characters in some walnut selections, to breed and patent new cultivars, to obtain new rootstocks resistant to diseases and pests and to analyze the best combinations of scions and rootstocks. For more than 50 years, Professor Ion Comanici has carried out multiple studies on the biology of walnut, in parallel with the research on vegetative propagation. The study on the variability of populations has highlighted a vast local gene pool, which currently constitutes the genetic basis for the breeding of valuable cultivars.
