Este artigo discute as políticas lingüísticas do Estado para os povos indígenas brasileiros desde a época da colonização até o presente momento. Mostra como algumas dessas políticas têm-se dado através da educação, mas questiona esse procedimento, tendo em vista a questão das terras indígenas, intrinsecamente relacionada à manutenção e vitalização das línguas indígenas. Chama a atenção para o papel dos lingüistas nesse processo. This article shows and discusses the linguistic State policies for the Brazilian Indigenous Peoples, from colonization on, assuming that those policies will be effective only in connection with other measures to be taken by the State, mainly those regarding the official registration, safeguarding, and the usufruct of the Indigenous Peoples lands by themselves. It is also called attention to the role of linguists in this process
