Witches seem to be the most recurrent female characters in fairy tales. It is believed that the English word witch originates from the Egyptian term baq, which means female power, a woman who is aware of her own power and is in turn an empowered woman. This study outlines the origin of witches in classical mythology in order to present them as literary characters and more precisely as protagonists of childhood literature. This analysis shows that the archetypes they represent have changed over time, from being the female personification of evil in traditional tales to being comical companions of young readers in contemporary literature
