This study discusses the interaction between the lexicon and the culture in the language community. The research aims to identify lexical-cultural traits in major circulation newspapers in Mozambique and to explain the link between the lexicon and culture taking into account the socio-cultural contexts. Based on a corpus collected in the “Notícias” and “Verdade” newspapers, we conclude that neologisms are closely\udlinked to culture and reflect what happens in a given period of time and at any place. The research concludes that some neologisms withstand time, some disappear and others are updated implying that languages are dynamic and move based on social variables. It was also concluded that the lexicon of Mozambique Portuguese distances itself from other varieties of portuguese because of the close connection with the culture of the speakers of the various mozambican bantu languages that interact with each other and when they come into contact with the portugue se as the official language of Mozambique
