The success of the economic policy pursued in any country largely depends on the effectiveness of strategic planning tools. Therefore, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev paid special attention to the instruments of the state planning system in his next Address. Considering the problems associated with many indicators of existing state programs, the President instructed to switch to the format of laconic national projects, understandable to all citizens. The presented article is devoted to the study of this issue to the peculiarities of national projects. This article compares national projects with government programs. The authors analyzed the content and main features of national projects of foreign countries. In addition, the introduction of project management for the successful implementation of national projects is justified. Based on the analysis carried out, a conclusion was made about what criteria national projects should have.
