this essay analyzes Vladimir Jankélévitch’s work on death pointing out, in the vast thought of the twentieth century, its original and sharply problematic contribution. if death is generally seen as the perimeter that provides life with sense and autenticity (Heidegger, Lévinas), or more traditionally as the threshold that leads to a salvific other world, Jankélévitch first of all dismantles any reassuring strategy and underlines the elusiveness of death itself, its constituting a “totally other order” that escapes every human category. As a consequence, if on the one hand the philosopher shows how every life has an “own death” that makes every life totally unique, on the other hand he highlights how the elusiveness of death delivers life, any life, to an unavoidable impropriety, which breaks through its individual and personal dimension.El ensayo analiza el trabajo de Vladimir Jankélévitch acerca de la “muerte” subrayando, en el interior de la amplia reflexión decimonónica sobre el tema, su aportación original y agudamente problemática. si en general la muerte ha sido vista como el ‘perímetro’ que otorga sentido y autenticidad a la vida (Heidegger, Lévinas), o más tradicionalmente como el umbral que introduce a un más allá salvífico, Jankélévitch desmantela ante todo cualquier estrategia aseguradora o apropiadora, y subraya la inasibilidad de la misma muerte, su constituir un “orden del todo otro” que escapa a toda categoría humana. De modo que si, por una parte, el filósofo muestra cómo toda vida tiene una “propia muerte” que vuelve cada vida del todo irrepetible, por otra parte pone de relieve de qué manera la inasibilidad de la muerte entrega la vida, toda vida, a una impropiedad insoslayable, que desfonda su dimensión individual y personal
