The sights of cities, an important genre of Baroque painting, almost disappeared with industrialization. The painters preferred to look back and to represent other topics. However, the modern city was breaking through in the painting of 19th and 20th centuries. The new image of the city is antithetical to the old veduta and acquired traits of representations of hell.Las vistas de ciudades, todo un género de la pintura barroca, prácticamente desaparecieron con la industrialización. Se siguieron reproduciendo algunos perfiles históricos con la melancolía de quien quisiera retener el mundo de ayer, pero en general los pintores prefirieron volver la vista y aplicarse a otros temas. No obstante, la ciudad moderna fue abriéndose paso en la pintura del siglo XIX y se afirmó en la del XX. La nueva imagen de la ciudad tiene mucho de antitético respecto a la antigua veduta y adquiere rasgos propios de las representaciones del infierno
