Chechen Chechen society historically consists of taipas (clan communities) united in tukhums (taip unions). Various sources give information on the total number of Chechen taipas, their names and the semantics of those names. However, these questions have not been thoroughly investigated up to this day. There is also no unequivocal understanding of the time of formation, and the role and function of Chechen taipa unions (tukhums). More than that, a trend has emerged in Chechen ethnology to deny the Chechen tukkhum as such. In this article, we offer our thoughts on these matters.
