UFABC: DA UNIVERSIDADE NOVA À UNIVERSIDADE DE CLASSE MUNDIAL?

O texto apresenta resultados de pesquisa sobre uso dos rankings acadêmicos em universidades públicas brasileiras. Os rankings existem desde o século XIX, mas tem mudado no século XXI passando da escala nacional para a global e divulgando seus resultados à sociedade, ecoados pela mídia. Além disso, adquirem maior importância no interior das universidades. A Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC) foi criada em 2005, inspirada na proposta de Universidade Nova, na seara das políticas de ampliação do acesso à educação superior brasileira desenvolvidas na década de 2000 e sob os auspícios da interdisciplinaridade e da inclusão social. Ao ganhar destaque em alguns rankings internacionais, a instituição foi escolhida em uma pesquisa que estuda os usos dos rankings em universidades brasileiras. Para tal, foi realizada uma análise de documentos institucionais da UFABC no período 2006-2019, buscando a aparição da temática rankings. A análise mostrou uma gradativa valorização dos rankings acadêmicos no interior da instituição, desde o aumento de matérias publicadas sobre essa temática, até o realce dos rankings em seu atual Plano de Desenvolvimento Institucional 2013-2022. Nos documentos analisados destacam-se as seguintes ações: acompanhar os vários rankings, elevar o número de citações e trabalhos publicados, melhorar o posicionamento da universidade em rankings nacionais e internacionais e usar rankings como instrumento na busca de excelência acadêmica. Finalmente, o texto mostra a contradição entre a inclusão social do projeto pedagógico originário da instituição e algumas das características das universidades de classe mundial.   Palavras-chave: Rankings acadêmicos. The paper presents research results regarding the use of academic rankings in Brazilian public universities. The rankings exist since the 19th century, but they are changing in the 21th century, moving from national to global scale. Not only the positioning of the universities in the rankings is informed to the society by the media, the rankings have also gained importance in the universities themselves. The Federal University of ABC (UFABC) was created in 2005, when policies to expand the access to higher education were developed by the government and were inspired by the proposal of Universidade Nova, based in inter-discipline and social inclusion. Upon gaining prominence in some international rankings, that institution was included in a survey that studies the uses of the rankings in Brazilian universities. To this end, an analysis of the UFABC institutional documents was carried out in the period of 2006-2019, seeking for the topic of the rankings. It was observed not only a gradual interest about rankings in the institution but the highlight of rankings in its current Institutional Development Plan 2013-2022. In the documents, the following actions stand out: monitoring the various rankings, increasing the number of citations and publications, improving the positioning of the university in national and international rankings and using rankings as an instrument in the pursuit of academic excellence. Finally, the paper shows the contradiction between social inclusion in the Institution’s Pedagogical Project and some of the characteristics of the World Class Universities.
