This article analyzes the architectural and planning formation of roadside complexes of the pre-industrial period. The main factors influencing the organization and transformation of these structures are identified. The characteristics of territorial differences of roadside complexes along roads, as well as in the structure of settlements, are considered. The influence of the Great Silk Road on the formation of roadside objects and the development of cities is revealed.
