The purpose of this article is to critically evaluate two theories of representation in the field of graphic design: the theory of visual perception by Rudolf Arnheim and the theory of illusion by Ernst Hans Gombrich. The critical approach chosen is the post-structuralism, that revises the discourses making clear to understand the universal and natural assumptions. For this, we go deeper into the base concepts of post-structuralism critique and, then, in the theoretical bases of the authors reviewed. This approach culminates in the proposition of a comparative framework that explains more clearly the universal assumptions in the selected authors. In this way, this article intends to contribute with reflections to the theories of representation and perception in the graphic design.
