English is now hailed as a lingua-franca of the modern era. While English is not an official language in many countries, it is currently the language most often taught as a second language around the world. India has a large population of English language speakers and our growth in areas like Information Technology and Business process Outsourcing has been attributed to this fact. The population of non-native speakers of English has risen tremendously in recent times that some linguists believe that it is no longer the exclusive cultural sign of “Native English Speakers”, but it is rather a language that is absorbing aspects of cultures worldwide as it continues to grow.
