General practitioners try to keep up to date with the latest developments in medicine, so that they can give the best care to their patients. The government introduced the controversial contract for GPs in 1990 and if we attend educational meetings in a variety of medical subjects, an allowance is given to cover expenses. This applies to principals only, as non-principals are expected to finance and motivate themselves. There are soon to be changes again when practice-based accreditation is introduced.
