N. Gerov’s dictionary impresses with an abundance of different names for the same concept collected from the living vernacular. The accumulation of these so-called „равнознаменаменователни речи“ (e.g. 67 words for [SNAIL] in the entry for рóглë, 30 for [CORN] in кукурýз, etc.) reveals the author’s design. At a time when no literary language had yet been created, N. Gerov presented this variety of names with the intention for them to serve as “equally” legitimate building material for the creation of the modern Bulgarian literary language. The author argues that these names are heteronyms (not synonyms) as they belong to different dialect systems. Keywords: dictionary, dialects, heteronyms, modern Bulgarian literary language
