The article explores the main trends in chintz ornament development with reference to major textile centres of the Russian Empire, such as St. Petersburg, Moscow and Vladimir Province. The meaning of the word ‘chintz’ is defined, and the place of chintz fabrics among domestic print textiles is established. Chintz ornaments are generally overviewed and grouped. An attempt is made to elicit how the traditions of a particular country influenced the stylistic features within each group.
