From 1946 to 1947, a famine ensued in Bessarabia, resulting in many victims. There are variety of interpretations of the causes of hunger, both in the scientific literature and in oral tradition of the region. In the last 15 years, a significant difference in the consciousness of the Gagauzes occured,as people stop being afraid and express their views openly. In some settlements inhabited by the Gagauzes (at local cemeteries), symbolic monuments commemorating the tragic events have been erected in recent years, and in the press and in scientific literature, this topic has ceased to be a forbidden topic.
