Land-use planning, disasters and development areclearly related. Risk-sensitive development practices andresponsible land use planning can contribute to resiliencebuilding. At the same time, poorly planned development canintensify social, economic, physical and environmentalvulnerabilities of the population and can trigger devastatingextreme events. Therefore, the process of disaster riskreduction has to be weaved into the developmental frameworkand India has given its commitment at national andinternational forums to ensure the same. However, since thereis no specific policy on integrating DRR into developmentplanning in India, this paper discusses the extent to which suchintegration is seen through one of the major projects- the NaviMumbai International Airport (NMIA) in the planning andapproval process, especially in the contexts of environmentalvulnerabilities. The study suggests that there are serious gapsbetween the policy proclamations that seek to ensuresustainable development through DRR integration intodevelopment projects and its implementation. Thus, muchmore work is needed to enforce the idea of mainstreamingDRR in to foster risk aware or risk sensitive development. Datafor this qualitative study was obtained from both primary aswell as secondary sources.
