Available knowledge about the formation of baric lows near the Alps is critically reviewed. Emphasis is laid on problems that require further investigation. A distinction between the process of formation of local depressions in the baric field and real cyclogenesis (generation of cyclonic vorticity) in the lee of the Alps is suggested on the basis of theoretical considerations about the role of inertial effects in rotating flows past obstacles. Finally, the general importance of the problem of secondary flows in the interaction with obstacles is emphasized
