Equations to be used for fitting data for the mean cosine of irradiance and the diffuse attenuation coefficient are developed from radiative transfer theory. Approximate models that have only a few parameters are developed and compared to those in the literature. A test is proposed for the validity of the model used with asymptotic closure theory for optical property estimation.
