Cu(II) carbonate complexation was examined in natural seawater between 5° and 35°C. The reaction enthalpy for the equilibrium Cu 2 + CO 3 2− ⇌ CuCO 3 0 , expressed in terms of total carbonate ion concentration, is ∼2.5 kcal mol −1 . The formation constant sw β 1 = [CuCO 3 0 ] [Cu 2+ ] −1 CO 3 2− ] T −1 , expressed in terms of total carbonate ion concentration in seawater, thus decreases by about 25% between 25° and 5°C.
