A computer‐controlled system is described that can detect very low respiration rates of planktonic organisms in unconcentrated samples of ocean water. The polarographic sensor used consumed < 10 −4 µ mol O 2 h −1 and thus required little stirring. Estimates of community respiration of −2.23±0.06 and −0.19±0.04 µ M O 2 h −1 were made during short‐term incubations of the waters of the middle and outer continental shelf of Georgia.
