Symbiotic Chlorella cells freshly isolated from green hydra were substantially freed of host cell debris by two methods: washing with 0.05% sodium dodecyl sulfate and centrifugation through a gradient of Percoll. Neither treatment reduced the viability or photosynthetic rate of the algal cells, but maltose release by the native symbionts of green hydra was abolished.
