A new, solid‐state, multiple‐component cathode, three‐electrode oxygen sensor has been adapted for use on a free‐fall CTD. Semipermeable membranes are not required for the sensor, giving it a very fast response time. The sensor is flow sensitive but with adequate control of the drop‐speed of the CTDO and appropriate electronic filtering, a vertical sampling resolution of 5 cm can be achieved. Changes in oxygen concentration of 3 µ M (0.067 mg liter ‒1 ) can be detected.
