An evaluation was made of the suitability of an ATP photometer for field measurements of phytoplankton 14 C activity. Over a wide range of 14 C activity the light output recorded by the photometer was linear. The activity of a natural phytoplankton sample can be accurately determined with such an instrument; samples must be allowed to dark‐adapt before analysis.
