Phytoplankton division rates were estimated by following time‐course changes in DNA using a DNA‐specific fluorescent dye. The method is simple, inexpensive, and rapid. A technique using a light bottle minus dark bottle method is described for estimating division rates of phytoplankton samples in natural waters.
