Germanic acid (5 mg Ge · liter −1 ) is shown to inhibit not only 67% of the carbon fixation in diatoms but also 21% of that in the sub‐10‐ µ m microflagellates of natural phytoplankton assemblages. Use of the reagent for quantifying primary production in the diatom component of mixed populations should take account of this.
