Dissolved humic substances in lake waters fluoresce strongly and may cause a substantial proportion of the fluorescence usually ascribed to in vivo chlorophyll. Chlorophyll measurements and other allied measurements such as DCMU‐enhanced fluorescence may thus be in serious error.
