The in situ pH at oceanic temperatures and pressures is calculated from the exact solution to the cubic equation relating total inorganic carbon dioxide to total alkalinity. The method does not require iteration. The equations for calculating pH from the partial pressure of carbon dioxide and the total alkalinity are also given.
