The light dependence of phosphate uptake by phytoplankton was investigated in natural assemblages incubated in a flow‐through deck incubator with neutral density screens used to attenuate light to desired levels. The relationship found approximates the Michaelis‐Menten kinetic function commonly used in algal nutrient uptake studies. Light half‐saturation constants, corrected for dark uptake, ranged from 11.3–18.3% of incident light and are comparable in some instances to those found for light‐dependent nitrate and ammonium uptake.
