During the annual 10‐m rise in water level, water from the Amazon River floods into bordering nutrient‐poor lakes, and river‐derived nitrate (12 µ M) and phosphate (0.9 µ M) are utilized during intense phytoplankton growth. The influence of the nutrient‐rich water appears to extend laterally in a 50‐km band, creating a ribbon of highly pro ductive lakes along its length that, in turn, may have a significant impact on Amazon water chemistry.
