A freezing probe impacted onto the surface of the sea had a very high efficiency for the removal of most materials present, surface water, and any suspended particulate material present to a depth of about 1,000 µ m. A PVC film cast on the sea surface removed solid materials and various organic compounds, such as lipids and hydrocarbons, floating on the surface but excluded aqueous phases.
