A method for precise measurement of incident illumination at the center of an algal suspension within the reaction chamber of an oxygen electrode allows reliable comparisons to be made of the photosynthetic characteristics of cultures of differing population densities and provides estimations of the degree of shade adaptation in cells of Chlorella comparable with those obtained by other methods. The reliability of the method is further confirmed by comparing the photosynthetic characteristics of synchronous cultures of Chlorella at different stages in the life cycle.
