The [ 35 S]SO 4 uptake method forestimating bacterial production was tested on two isolates from a freshwater lake. The rate of S (as SO 4 ) uptake multiplied by the cell C:S ratio was an accurate estimate of bacterial carbon production over a wide range of growth rates. The C:S weight ratios ranged from 98 to 110 for five isolates (< x > = 103) and was 218 for a sixth, assuming an isotopic discrimination of 4% for 35 S vs. 32 S uptake. Further investigation is required before SO 4 uptake can be used as a measure of bacterial production in field studies.
