Rates of respiration of the community associated with the attached dead shoots of Spartina alterniflora and Juncus roemerianus were highest during the warmer season except in midsummer when rates dropped. The rates for the Spartina community. were about twice those for Juncus . Within the S. alterniflora “dead plant community” high respiration rates were associated with low net DOC release rates.
