Untake and retention of 14 C‐glucose by bacteria in freshwater was studied using the heterotrophic potential method. Fixing the organisms with acid and immediately cooling to 0°C eliminated the loss of labeled material frequently observed when organisms were acidified only. The cooling treatment also reduced the variability between replicate kinetic parameters calculated from assimilation data.
