An apparatus is described for modeling stratified water systems. It comprises a cylindrical tank (about 2 × 0.5 m) illuminated from above and cooled at the bottom. Various chemical and physical conditions are automatically monitored by a collection of probes which continuously tracks up and down throughout the depth of the tank. A device for taking integrated water samples is incorporated in the apparatus.
