A scanning radiometer was used for in situ determinations of the light utilization efficiencies of phytoplankton in Lake Kinneret. For a profile measured during the near maximum of daily irradiance in July, light utilization efficiencies in the epilimnion ranged from 0.07–2.61%, increasing with depth down to the thermocline where maximum quantum efficiencies of 0.07 moles C einstein ‒1 absorbed were estimated. Light utilization efficiency integrated for the epilimnetic water column was 0.35%.
