A bottom trap for collection of recent sedimentary deposits has been constructed and field tested. The technique provides material, deposited within a known time span, unaffected by bioturbation in the upper biologically active sediment layer. The trap has an area of 1,541 cm 2 and an edge height of 5 cm. Before retrieval, a lid is lowered onto the trap. The apparatus is easy to handle and has yielded representative values for the rate of deposition.
