The relationship between phosphorus export and several morphologic parameters was examined for 18 forested drainage basins underlain by igneous bedrock. A regression model ( r = 0.94) relating phosphorus export to the length of stream per unit area (drainage density) is presented: A hypothesis based on terrestrial retention of phosphorus and baseflow is proposed to explain the relationship.
