A sampler consisting of five rods 76 cm long attached to a nonporous neoprene‐coated nylon bag 63 cm long was inserted into a hole 60 cm deep dug with the aid of a culvert. Experiments with it were conducted in parallel with subsurface colonization cans and the Surber sampler. The cans contained 142.7% greater biomass, the Surber 72.2% less biomass than the bag; 28.7% of the fauna lived below 17.5 cm of gravel.
