Swarms of Moina affinis were composed almost entirely of adults of which 8.1−9.4% were males, 13.3−59.3% were females with ephippia, 32.6−69.5% were parthenogenetically reproducing, and up to 7.7% were immature. Other species made up <0.2% of the swarms. In contrast, Moina affinis made up only 25.8% of a nearby nonswarming portion of the planktonic crustacea and nearly half of those were immature. Swarming may be associated with reproduction.
