Previously published data on the C:N ratio in large‐scale cultures of seminatural marine plankton are used to demonstrate the importance of choosing the appropriate method for data interpretation. The remarks hold for work on other ratios in such cultures. The difficulty of deriving the elementary composition of phytoplankton from field samples is noted.
