Higher concentrations of adult Diaptomus clavipes were found in the open water area of a pond than in the region in which rooted aquatic vegetation, primarily Potamogeton foliosus, approached the surface. Laboratory experiments revealed high mortality and no reproduction in cultures of D. clavipes in which P. foliosus was allowed to float free, with no significant changes from controls when vegetation was restricted to a small area. Inclusion of simulated rooted aquatics (polyethylene tubing) lowered the reproductive rate below that in cultures without tubing. These . results suggest that P. foliosus is important in regulating both distribution and density of D. clavipes in the pond.
