The downwelling velocities associated with Langmuir circulations in Lake Ontario correlate well with wind speed under surface cooling. With surface heating the correlations with wind speed are poor and calculations of a stability parameter indicate a different proportionality. Observations of surface phenomena indicate that surface slicks and capillary wave damping are in operation at the point of downwelling.
