Details on construction and operation of a relatively inexpensive closing Tucker trawl are presented. The trawl is opened and closed with a mechanical messenger‐actuated release device. Flow is monitored by a meter which records only when the net is fishing. Trawls of 1.8 × 1.8 m and 1.8 × 3.6 m in mouth dimension have been constructed; both can be fished on 3/16‐inch (4.8 mm) hydrowire.
