Continuous vertical profiles of chlorophyll, determined by in vivo fluorometry, provide a rapid, sensitive method of delineating phytoplankton distribution. Other chemical or biological sampling can accordingly take into account details of algal stratification. Illustrative results are given from work in Lake Kinneret.
