The control of p H in seawater is effected through the whole set of ion‐pairing equilibria, involving all of the major ions in seawater, rather than through the simple reaction series between water and carbon dioxide. The resistance to change of this system is greater than the buffer capacity of the CO 2 system, and the speed of reaction is much faster than that of the silicate system proposed by Sillén.
